The Association of Energy Engineers, in cooperation with the Efficiency Valuation Organization (EVO), has established the Certified Measurement and Verification Professional program with the dual purpose of recognizing the most qualified professionals in this growing area of the energy industry, and raising the overall professional standards within the measurement and verification field.

The International Performance Measurement & Verification Protocol (IPMVP), first established by the U.S. D.O.E., has become the internationally recognized protocol for performance measurement and verification (M&V). The IPMVP guidelines, built with the help of organizations from 16 countries and hundreds of individual experts from 25 nations, provides a consistent, reliable approach to M&V around the world. Objectives

  • To raise the professional standards of those engaged in measurement and verification
  • To improve the practice of measurement and verification by encouraging professionals to partake in a continuing education program of professional development for measurement and verification professionals
  • To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of measurement and verification through completing the certification and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct
  • To award special recognition to those professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness in measurement and verification

Eligibility

In addition to meeting one of the criteria below, candidates in the U.S. are required to verify completion of a minimum of 2 hours of Safety Training within the last three years and participation in five commercial audits within the last three years. Two of the audits are a minimum of 10,000 sq. ft. Also, the audits have been of at least two different building types.

*Related degree in science, engineering, architecture, business, law, finance, or related field and related experience in energy, building or facility management, or measurement and verification.

In-Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, CMVP-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CMVP preparatory training seminar, submit the CMVP-IT certification application, and pass the CMVP certification examination. The CMVP-IT certification is valid for six years, which allows you time to meet the full CMVP certification eligibility requirements.

Requirements

All CMVP candidates must attend one of the preparatory CMVP training seminars, submit a CMVP certification application, and pass an open book examination, which is proctored by an approved exam administrator.

The examination is based on an approved Body of Knowledge, which includes the main subject areas and the percentages of each included in the examination.
